Mother’s Day is here.
It is May and time to honor our mothers. My sweet mother has been gone for 11 years, but I will take the time on Mother’s Day, as I often do, to remember all the wonderful ways she touched my life.
This issue features several stories that showcase motherhood. I think you will enjoy Andrea Poe’s “Mother-Daughter Tropical Escape” story about their trip to Jamaica’s Round Hill Hotel and Villas and its simple pleasures. Likewise, our book review of LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER: What She Said Then, What We’re Saying Now, a collection of 56 candid, funny, poignant, unexpected and soul-bearing essays, is inspiring in that it spawned a Listen to Your Mother movement that this month will feature nearly 40 nationwide events. Those of us who remember mom’s delicious cooking (at least my mom’s was), will enjoy Suzette Zara’s suggestion that making her slow-cooked pot roast and garlic mashed potatoes for mother on Mother’s Day is just the ticket. Besides, her recipes of comfort food are the skinny versions. Finally, you must read in Parting Thoughts the stories of two mothers who laud motherhood in spite of daunting personal circumstances.
The issue also features two iconic events that offer the community a lot of pleasure. First up is the 21st Annual Balboa Island Artwalk on May 17. For anyone who loves art, live music and the out-of-doors, this event is for you. Then, there is the three-day Newport Beach Wine Festival at the Balboa Bay Resort on May 22–24. The Memorial Day weekend classic fulfills dreams for the avid food and wine (and beer) aficionados in the resort’s gorgeous waterfront setting.
You will enjoy the fairytale story of how a little puppy bought as a pet turned out to be a grand champion at the Westminster Dog Show in 2013. Laura Garrett, Orange County Business Journal’s vice president/associate publisher, loves her wire-haired dachshund, Greta Garbo (yes, Greta Garbo!), and so do we after hearing how she touches hearts wherever she goes. You will also read about Julie Laughton and her very successful Design Build business. From the little Lemars, Iowa, girl who loved drawing and painting to today’s interior designer, Certified Custom Kitchen and Bath Designer, and general contractor, Laughton exudes talent and a propensity for keeping clients, who often become friends. Newport Beach Lifestyle’s Vice President Ana Launes writes about her experience at the newly-opened One Fitness & Therapy in Newport Beach, where she came away pain-free from sciatica pain and with a change in her physical structure, due to exercises for natural posture.
Enjoy the Good Times feature, which showcases nonprofits and their supporters in our community, our Around Town department, which focuses on some fun and interesting community happenings, and our Lifestyle Calendar, which will help you set your datebook through May.
Again, as I said in my inaugural issue as editor, there is much to remind you in the magazine of what an amazing community we live in, and we look forward to sharing more of those enticing stories in the months ahead.
Until next time,
Donna Bunce, Editor
