Akoko Okeyo was presented the Newport Beach Lifestyle Artist Award at the 21st Annual Balboa Island Artwalk by the magazine’s Publisher Randy Harding. The talented artist engraves on glass by hand, using a drill. “Think of the drill as my brush and the glass as the canvas,” Okeyo says. Each of her works of art is unique. See her beautifully executed dolphin vase. Okeyo received a one-month ad in the magazine. See more of her work at AkokoArt.com.

Celebrating Independence Day!

Our country will be 239 years old on the Fourth of July, our Independence Day. It seems fitting that our cover shows Betsy Ross and her handiwork, albeit a Pageant of the Masters recreation (with real people posing) made to look like Edward Percy Moran’s “The Birth of Old Glory.” The total recreation can be seen below with Ross showing the flag to General George Washington. Our Locals Only story about the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor’s Sixth Annual Field of Honor with its 1,776 American flags at Castaways Park on Armed Forces Day weekend touches hearts, and Suzette Zara’s Red White & Blueberries recipe featuring some yummy offerings is perfect for a Fourth of July picnic.

The Boys of Summer

I love baseball–not the major league stuff with all of the hoopla–I mean the teenage-level, (not even 3&2) real baseball on real grass. There really are differences, and I’m not talking about the fact that no one walks by my fold-out chair with a hot dog, peanuts and a cold beer.

Cecilia DeMille Presley distinctly remembers being on the Samson and Delilah film set as her grandfather Cecil B. DeMille directed the soon-to-be colossal hit. Ten years old at the time, the loving granddaughter lived with her grandfather and grandmother, just up the street from her family’s home in Los Feliz, California.

2015 Infiniti QX80

2015 Infiniti QX80 1

The Infiniti QX80 is a vehicle of contradictions, and it always leaves me with mixed feelings. I’ve never been a fan of the exterior styling, yet the interior beckons with soft leather and wood trim. The V-8 engine guzzles fuel, but it is extremely smooth and strong enough to tow 8,500 pounds. In summary, this full-size SUV shines from the inside out and delivers luxury on par with anything in its segment.

Embracing Our Heritage

Embracing Our Heritage 8

There are three special days in Newport Beach each year when you can view an impressive array of 1,776 American flags fluttering in the breeze. The breathtaking sight happens in May on Armed Forces Day weekend, thanks to the men of the 89-year-old Exchange Club of Newport Harbor, who work tirelessly to make the three-day event meaningful to the community.

Aging Got You Down?

Aging Got You Down? 1

Men and women age differently, but when it comes to the effects of aging, they are very similar. Effects like memory loss, mood changes and lack of focus seem to have become widely accepted consequences of growing old.

Two Years and Growing!

It is amazing how your perspective on life and your career can change within an instant. A chance meeting, a phone call, a business connection, or unexpected health issues have the ability to drastically affect your life and your career path. I received an interesting phone call 32 months ago from my brother, and my life and career path will never be the same again.
