Each year on February 14th, many people exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special “valentine.” Records tell us that approximately 150 million cards are exchanged annually on this day of romance we call Valentine’s Day, making it the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas.
“I’m in love,” moans my husband as he reclines back in satisfaction. While I wish these doting words were directed at me, the aroma inducing his blissful smile surely is not my new eau de perfume; I can tell that with each savory bite of his rib eye, it’s apparent that my husband is sweet-talking the steak. I can’t really blame him. Newport Beach’s A Restaurant is known for its prime cuts. Chef Jonathan Blackford purchases from five prime purveyors to ensure that his beef is always top notch. “He only uses the best,” says operating partner and restaurant veteran Jordan Otterbein. The charred medium rare perfection that appeared sizzling at our table now glistens with melted herb butter, garnished on the side by a petite head of roasted garlic. The dish leaves nothing to the imagination. It’s just a great steak.

Charleston, South Carolina, has been ranked the No. 1 city in the U.S. and Canada for three consecutive years by Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards.
I’m ensconced in a plush demi-lune banquette with my husband about to embark upon the fifth meal of our first day in Charleston, South Carolina. A plate of velvety foie gras, served with a petite apple handpie and topped with mascarpone crème fraîche is presented. So, too, is a glass of Disznoko Tokaji Aszu “5 Puttonyos,” a complex and elegant Hungarian sweet wine, that Mickey Bakst, the bon vivant manager of Charleston Grill, informs us is essential. And, there’s no saying no. After all, the chef here, Michelle Weaver, is a culinary pioneer in a town that has blossomed into one of America’s food meccas.
The 107th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade saw 85 boats decked out in their finest holiday attire glide through the waters of Newport Harbor to grand applause from thousands of spectators for five consecutive nights in mid-December. Together with television, radio and social media coverage, more than 1 million people enjoyed the decorated boats–some extravagantly so!–as they set the harbor aglow. Rated by Yahoo! Travel as #2 in the country for holiday lights and by the New York Times as one of the “top holiday happenings in the nation,” it is a tradition in which the City of Newport Beach and the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Commodore’s Club, who hosts it, can be very proud. The Mazda MX-5 (originally called the Miata) has long been the personification of driving fun and the fourth-generation 2016 model continues to be just that. The original MX-5 Miata, introduced in 1989, was the reincarnation of a British sports car and more than 950,000 have been sold worldwide.
According to Mazda, the all-new 2016 is lighter, smaller, quicker and more nimble than its predecessor. The wheelbase is nearly one inch shorter and curb weight is 2,332 pounds. Mazda says that increased use of high-tensile steel and careful attention to reducing even the slightest amount of weight with every component resulted in a total weight reduction of 150 pounds.

“The day I met her, I told her I was going to marry her,”
Dino Cancellieri recalls saying to Leslie Warden the day they met. It was a prophetic statement.
Their early years saw Leslie as the middle child of five children, whose parents, John and Celia Warden, were an auto mechanic and stay-at-home mom, respectively. Dino’s father, Larry Cancellieri, owned a wholesale produce company on the terminal market in Los Angeles, while Mary, his mother, was a homemaker. He was the older of two brothers.
Every time I watch an episode of Hoarders, I am prompted to clean out the physical clutter from my home and office. As a technology coach, I often see how people can be overwhelmed by what I’ll politely call “over-storage” of emails.
Having virtual and visual clutter in an email inbox can make one’s computing time unproductive and frustrating. Digital housekeeping can be extremely liberating.
The goal: To set up a system where you receive a manageable amount of email that is relevant to you, store and retrieve what you need and delete the rest.
Held at the beautiful Soka University campus in Aliso Viejo, the “Celebrating a Vision of Peace” gala featured Broadway star David Burnham and a showstopping 4.81 carat heart-shaped diamond necklace in the live auction.
Providence Speech and Hearing Center celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a black-tie gala at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort, where supporters enjoyed tempting auctions, a scrumptious dinner and fabulous dancing to JT & Friends.
Exquisite jewelry and great timepieces can create a chic aura around the person who wears them, but why? How to account for jewelry’s magical effects? Why are some of us so magnetically attracted to great jewels and watches?
Wilkinson does have a point. Precious metals are the result of meteorite bombardments that occurred 200 million years after Earth was formed, and gemstones are created over millennia under intense pressures deep within the earth. This year, celebrate your love and communion with Creation by giving jewels and/or watches created by one of the following heritage brands or high luxury designers.
Candy equals love. Or, so I thought. When I was in second grade, Kirk Fyson placed a box of candy on my desk with a handwritten note wishing me a Happy Valentine’s Day. I was smitten. I fondled each heart-shaped morsel while re-reading the messages in a whisper. Flipping them back and forth with my fingers, I would eventually consume them and my mouth would turn bright pink. Be mine. Love you. Kiss me. I recited them over and over in my head. Meanwhile, all the classroom activity around me remained just a muffled blur. I was in love. My candy told me so.
