Celebrating Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters 2016
With Festival of Arts celebrating 84 years this summer and Pageant of the Masters a year behind, we are witnessing an extraordinary art partnership right here in Orange County.
For many of us, attending the Festival and Pageant at the beautiful Laguna Bowl on the Festival of Arts grounds in Laguna Beach is an annual pilgrimage, one we look forward to each summer with great anticipation. If, however, you are not familiar with them, here’s a short synopsis:
Festival of Arts
The Festival of Arts is one of the nation’s oldest juried fine art shows, which showcases a plethora of renowned artists in a wide variety of media, such as paintings, photography, printmaking, sculpture, jewelry, handcrafted wood and furniture, ceramics, glass, and more. USA Today readers tout it among the top five festivals in the nation. Offered during its run are demonstrations and art workshops, live music, daily art tours, special events, exhibitions of local student artwork, on-site restaurants, and more. It has proven to be a haven for art lovers and collectors, who love to browse and purchase art.
Pageant of the Masters
The Pageant of the Masters is the Festival of Arts’ crowning jewel and arguably one of the most unique productions in the entire world. Each night during the summer season, a 90-minute stage show is presented of “living pictures,” which are incredibly faithful art re-creations of classical and contemporary works with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. An outdoor amphitheater, professional orchestra, original score, live narration, intricate sets, sophisticated lighting, expert staff, and hundreds of dedicated volunteers have won recognition for the Pageant as the best presentation of its kind.

Special one-day events include the Festival Runway Fashion Show and Family Art Day. Also of note, are three new events this year: The Rising Stars Music Series will spotlight young emerging performers selected by the Festival’s roster of world-famous musicians; Book and Brunch is a meet and talk with authors, who will share personal insights about their work and creative process: Art and Story Time is a new weekly series for children five and under. Every Monday will feature a different story read aloud, along with a hands-free art project and special surprise visits from illustrators, book characters, and more.
Pageant of the Masters 2016 8:30 p.m. nightly
This year’s Pageant of the Masters’ theme is Partners. The Pageant is presenting compelling collaborations that have led to the creation of unforgettable artworks, filled with provocative and passionate tales of some of art’s dynamic duos–artists and patrons, models, muses, even dance partners! The one-of-a-kind theatrical event features live narration and original music performed live by the Pageant’s orchestra. Pageant Director Diane Challis Davy is saying there will be a first-time behind-the-scenes look at how tableaux are created and how volunteers are selected for the show.
Celebrity Benefit Concert and Pageant
