Alzheimer’s Orange County’s 18th Annual “Creating Hope” gala at AV Irvine honored supporters and recognized community partners. The Broadway memories-themed benefit drew 350 guests and helped generate thousands for the nonprofit, which were directed towards care and support programs for the 84,000 Orange County residents afflicted by the disease.
This is a special summer–the summer of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games! Our cover of beach volleyball’s three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings reflects that. Having won three Olympic gold medals with partner Misty May-Trainor, she is competing in her fourth Olympics with 2012 Olympic silver medalist April Ross, in hopes of winning a fourth gold medal and setting a record as the most decorated beach athlete (male or female) in the sport. This lady isn’t even thinking about a silver or bronze! You will enjoy our story about the recent Association of Volleyball Professionals Tournament, hosted in Huntington Beach, where Jennings/Ross won and moved on to qualify for the Rio Games.
Finding a seafood restaurant near the beach isn’t difficult. But, discovering one that serves fresh upscale cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere is a tad trickier. In our home, I am the one who likes to play with fire. Whether grilling salmon on cedar planks, sizzling some steaks doused in a dry rub, tossing veggies in a slotted metal pan, or daintily creating grill marks on fresh peaches, it’s all great fun. Here are a few things I have gleaned over the years that may improve your summertime success. And, for those who might think “grilling is just not me,” I do have two creative restaurant options with stellar BBQ menus.
The National Park Service turns 100 on August 25th, 2016, and many of the parks are planning to celebrate the centennial of Woodrow Wilson putting pen to paper to “conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and … leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.”
Hundreds of history lovers attended the Balboa Island Museum & Historical Society’s 2016 Historic Home Tour. The one-of-a-kind experience to view seven historic Balboa Island homes and a 1924 vintage yacht was a huge draw. The iconic former residence of actor Buddy Ebsen and the “Jaws House,” designed by architect John Lautner with its balcony shaped like a shark’s open mouth, delighted attendees. JLOCC hosted its inaugural LUNAFEST®, a festival featuring six short films made for and about women, at the Port Theater in Corona del Mar. Following the screenings, guests enjoyed a Hollywood-themed red carpet party, with proceeds supporting the nonprofit’s initiatives and the Breast Cancer Fund.
It was Vivan Clecak’s night. The recently-retired Human Options Founding CEO received the Dove Award for her unwavering 35-year mission to make the nonprofit a standout for its domestic violence programs. With a picture perfect day, live music and more than 100 participating artists offering everything from paintings and jewelry to pottery and blown glass, the 22nd Annual Balboa Island Artwalk did not disappoint. Artist David E. Allen was awarded the Newport Beach Lifestyle Artist Award for his work.
The Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) is the premier American professional beach volleyball tour and exclusive U.S. beach volleyball home of the nation’s top male and female athletes, including Olympic gold, silver and bronze medalists. The tour is entering its 33rd season. Under the ownership of Donald Sun since 2012, the AVP is scheduled to hold eight tournaments across the U.S. This year, the 2016 AVP Roadmap launched on Friday, January 29, in New Orleans, continuing on to Huntington Beach, Cincinnati (Federation of International Volleyball or FIVB), Seattle, New York, San Francisco, Manhattan Beach, and, finally, finishing this coming September 4 in Chicago.
Newport Beach Tennis Club recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The prestigious club has hosted major tennis tournaments, including the Davis Cup, with tennis legends the likes of Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Connors, and Pete Sampras, participating. The club proudly promotes a sense of family with its membership.
The 50th summer of the Sawdust Art Festival is here. Since 1966, the festival has expanded greatly from a humble dirt lot to a sprawling, three-acre eucalyptus grove in Laguna Canyon. Over time, Sawdust came to organically incorporate many forms of art, education programs and charity efforts. This has allowed the festival to grow, not just its size, but also the unique opportunities it creates for the Laguna community.
