Balboa Island Museum’s 
Historic Home Tour

Hundreds of history lovers attended the Balboa Island Museum & Historical Society’s 2016 Historic Home Tour. The one-of-a-kind experience to view seven historic Balboa Island homes and a 1924 vintage yacht was a huge draw. The iconic former residence of actor Buddy Ebsen and the “Jaws House,” designed by architect John Lautner with its balcony shaped like a shark’s open mouth, delighted attendees. Refreshments were served throughout the day at the Balboa Island Museum, as everyone enjoyed walking the charming island neighborhood.

Dance Spectacular Launches 30th Anniversary Season

Segerstrom Center for the Arts is launching its 30th Anniversary season on August 27 with “Tour de Force III,” a star-studded evening of dance. The celebration will represent the center’s breadth of programming during its 30 years of presenting the greatest ballet companies and the world’s most celebrated dancers. There are four Center premieres scheduled with an international cast that includes Diana Vishneva, Joaquin de Luz, Marcelo Gomes, Denis Matvienko, Marcelino Sambé, Friedemann Vogel and Edward Watson, as well as members of the Royal Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada.

“Lord of the Strings” Concert Series

SOCO Center Costa Mesa is hosting the “Lord of the Strings” concert series at LCA Wine, beginning on August 21. Laurence Juber, two-time Grammy winner and former lead guitarist for Paul McCartney’s Wings Band, will entertain, as guests enjoy wine selections curated by LCA Wine and select food pairings from Surfas Culinary District. Performance 3 p.m./Tickets $30.

Charter School 
Opens Doors

Scholarship Prep, Orange County’s newest countywide, independent public charter school serving transitional kindergarten through eighth grade students, will open at 1010 W. 17th Street in Santa in August. Led by former California State Senator Gloria Romero and longtime educator and charter school operator Jason Watts, it is a comprehensive public charter school with an emphasis on foster youth and socioeconomically disadvantaged students. The high-caliber campus’ motto is “Dream Bigger, Reach Higher.”

Book Captures Orange County’s Reputation as Economic Powerhouse

Author Chuck D. Martin’s new book, Orange County, Inc.: The Evolution of an Economic Powerhouse, was featured at a reception at UCI’s Beckman Center sponsored by Partners of the UCI Libraries. UCI Chancellor Howard Gillman and University Librarian Lorelei Tanji made opening remarks, followed by a presentation by Martin and a discussion with special guests Eric R. Spangenberg, Dean of UCI’s Paul Merage School of Business, and Rick Reiff, PBS SoCal TV host of “Inside OC.” The stories about the courageous, visionary people who created highly successful businesses in Orange County are quite remarkable.

Festival Ballet Theatre’s “Gala of Stars”

World-renowned ballet artists will share the stage at the Irvine Barclay Theatre for a spectacular night of dance on August 12 at Festival Ballet Theatre’s Ninth Annual “Gala of Stars.” Ballet icons will perform classical repertory, as well as contemporary highlights. The dance companies represented include American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Staatsballett Berlin and the Mariinsky Theatre. VIP ticket holders have the opportunity to meet and dine with the guest artists at a post-show reception at the Barclay.
