The New Year signals a chance to master the elusive art of relaxation. Here are resort spas around the world that offer one-of-a-kind experiences that can help you on your journey.

Beverly Hills:  Four Seasons Wilshire. An epitome of glamour since 1928, this is the only spa in the country to offer a diamond rose facial, which relies on diamond dust–yes, the real thing–and Damask roses to brighten and tone skin.

New Orleans: The Ritz Carlton. Where else in the world can you get a voodoo love massage than in the heart of the French Quarter? Tapping cypress and moss along with absinthe–how can this party city resist?–this treatment involves a handcrafted poultice to ease weary muscles.

Washington, D.C.:  Four Seasons. It’s no surprise that the power center of the world doesn’t fool around when it comes to transformation. For fast results, the non-surgical facelift employs microcurrent technology and LED therapy firms up tired and sagging muscles.

Palm Beach, Florida: The Breakers. This uber-luxe seaside property was designed with total relaxation in mind. The debut of its recently revamped spa offerings, like outdoor moonlight massages and a quartz massage, where guests lie on a bed of warm, flowing alpha-quartz sand.

Scottsdale, Arizona: Canyon Suites at The Phoenician. An elegant desert setting is the backdrop for spiritual wellness with therapies like chakra balancing, cupping, “intuitive guidance” and even tarot card readings that accompany facials and massages.

Charleston, South Carolina: Charleston Place. In addition to locally-inspired treatments like the magnolia blossom body scrub, this airy spa is dedicated to skin cancer prevention, offering quick body scans, along with bracelets that glow when the wearer is exposed to harmful rays.

New York, N.Y.: Shibui Spa at the Greenwich Hotel. This Tribeca oasis transports you to Asia with its 250-year-old Japanese farmhouse roof tiles and an ofuro mineral-soaking tub. Treatments lean eastward, including the signature Drunken Lotus massage that employs plant-based oils and sake-infused towels.

Montego Bay, Jamaica: Half Moon Resort.  It’s hard to beat a setting like an overwater bungalow for a marine-based treatment like a Caribbean shell massage. Fern Tree, the largest spa on the Caribbean island, uses indigenous botanicals for all of its offerings.

Dubai: ShiQui Spa at Atlantis, The Palm. This swank two-story spa domed by Arabic arches and flanked by lanterns recently debuted a jet-lag zapping treatment called ZeroBody. By lying fully clothed on a dry waterbed that delivers soothing LED lights, you listen to a guided mediation, and your body relaxes and stimulates endorphins.

La Fortuna, Costa Rica:  Tabacon Thermal Resort & Spa. Set in the rainforest at the base of the Arenal Volcano, the spa features natural springs and cascading waterfalls heated by the volcano’s magma. Couples massages involve hot volcanic mud and conclude with a traditional love chant in Maleku (the region’s indigenous language).

Zurich, Switzerland: Swissotel’s SPA & Sport. This property is located in Zurich, the homeland of wellness and medi spas. An infinity pool –the highest pool in the city—and a bio sauna with a view of the Alps encourage lingering after such treatments as the alpine massage, which uses essential oils captured from the landscape to open breathing passages and calm the mind.

Hue, Vietnam: Vedana Lagoon Resort & Spa. This well-guarded secret is perched along a vast lagoon in a lush jungle. Vedana, which means “sensation” in Sanskrit, offers restorative treatments beneath grass-roofed shalas. Treatments like the dragon fruit, aloe and papaya body wrap, which utilize ingredients plucked from the resort’s own gardens, are paired with daily tai chi and yoga classes.

Cusco, Peru: JW Marriott El Convento Spa. Evoke the Inca at the subterranean spa here in Cusco, an Andean city that’s a jumping off point for travelers to Machu Picchu. The Barro Andino (Andean Mud Wrap) combines seaweed from the Pacific Ocean with mud from the Andes that contains natural salt minerals.

Rome, Italy: The Aqva City Spa at Grand Hotel. Situated on chic Via Veneto, this Déco-inspired marble temple taps chromotherapy, aromatherapy and thalassic (sea water) therapies for all of its massages, facials and body wraps.

Port of Spain, Trinidad: Hyatt Regency Spa. The spa’s mineralizing mud mas body wrap is inspired by the traditional Carnival masquerade “Mud Mas,” or J’ouvert. During the festivities, mud is seen as a unifying substance and energizing, driving force. Created from a blend of seaweed, vegetal coral and alpha hydroxyl, this marine wrap is said to jumpstart the metabolism.

Mendoza, Argentina: The Entre Cielos Hamam & Spa. This is the only traditional six-stage circuit hammam in Latin America.  It incorporates the property’s vineyard into the mix with detoxifying vinotherapy treatments, such as a grape seed exfoliation and wine baths.
