It’s Kewpie Time!

Take a walk down memory lane or discover for the first time the Kewpie doll, one of the first mass-produced toys in the world, at the Balboa Island Museum. Created in the early 1900s by self-taught artist Rose O’Neill after her baby brother and his funny tufts of hair and chubby cheeks, the exhibit is on loan from Balboa Island resident and Museum President Shirley Pepys, who was involved with the design and merchandising of the Kewpie doll. Under Hancock’s leadership, Rancho Santa Margarita’s Tesoro High School choirs grew from a single class into an award-winning program with more than 200 singers, who have toured Europe, performed at Carnegie Hall and at the 2012 and 2016 American Choral Directors Conventions.
