The friendly atmosphere and quality libations and cuisine makes it a local favorite
The Royal Hen, nestled into the idyllic village-esque location on Balboa Island, offers vivid red iron gates that draw you into a stylish bistro-like space that has the feel of a classic English countryside. A perfect spot for a night out, Royal Hen greets you with hospitality and welcoming service as soon as you walk through the door.
Owned by a doctor and operated by “Boss Hen” Cynthia Shafer on a daily basis, the concept and vision of the restaurant is simple:
“We provide excellent quality food and unique wines in a casual, comfortable atmosphere. Our customers become our friends and return time and time again,” Shafer says.
Their hard-to-find selection of esoteric grower-to-producer California and French wines is truly special and shines through their offerings.
If you are in the mood for a cocktail, the Hen has distinct signatures. Head bartender Nat Weaver has a true passion for his craft and stands by his philosophy of “European style libations with an American flair utilizing fortified wines and handmade cordials.”
The food at Royal Hen reflects a worldly past with European, Mexican, and Asian influences. One inspired dish in particular on the menu is the prosciutto-wrapped asparagus.
“This dish was inspired by the years I lived in Europe,” Shafer says. “We would go to the fields and pick asparagus, go to the butcher and get freshly sliced prosciutto, and then go to the baker and get freshly baked bread.”
When visiting Royal Hen, expect to hear staff calling and remembering guests by name, taste exceptional wines and enjoy an exciting modernized version of creative pub-style food.
“We provide excellent quality food and unique wines in a casual, comfortable atmosphere. Our customers become our friends and return time and time again,” Cynthia Shafer says.
